Opera 2020: Der Fliegende Holländer
François Girard, whose mystical and bloody vision of Wagner's Parsifal has become one of the most intensely visceral moments of the Met in recent seasons, turns to another Wagnerian masterpiece, The Dutch Flying, directed by Valery Gergiev. For the first time at the Met, Sir Bryn Terfel interprets the role of the mysterious Dutchman, sentenced to sail the seas for eternity, with Anja Kampe in the role of the devoted Senta, whose love can free him. In a nod to Senta's obsession with the portrait of the legendary chief sailor, the Met's scene is transformed into a colossal oil painting. Franz-Josef Selig interprets Senta's father, Daland, Sergey Skorokhodov plays the role of hunter Erik; David Portillo, that of the helmsman, and Mihoko Fujimura is Mary, the Senta nurse.
