À la fois rêveur et surdoué, Jim, 11 ans, vit avec son père, un astronaute qui doit prochainement se rendre dans l’espace. Lors d’un concours de jeunes scientifiques dans sa nouvelle école, il est amené à travailler en binôme avec Emma, une jeune fille sensible et touchante. Malgré la réticence d’Emma, Jim la convainc de construire en secret une montgolfière. Quand Jim apprend que son père lui a menti et a abandonné sa mission spatiale, il décide de lui prouver qu’il a eu tort de renoncer à ses rêves. Prêts à tout pour atteindre leur but, Jim et Emma relèvent ce défi aussi fou qu’excitant, qui va petit à petit les rapprocher.
